Shasta Groene is a survivor of a highly publicized kidnapping and murder case that took place in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 2005. At the age of eight, she was abducted by Joseph Edward Duncan III, who had invaded her family’s home. During the invasion, Duncan brutally murdered Shasta's mother, Brenda Groene, her older brother Slade Groene, and her mother’s boyfriend, Mark McKenzie.

Following the attack, Shasta and her brother, Dylan Groene, went missing, which initiated a massive search effort. Several weeks later, in July 2005, Shasta was found alive at a Denny's restaurant in Coeur d'Alene, where Duncan had taken her. Tragically, her brother Dylan was later confirmed to have been murdered by Duncan.

Joseph Edward Duncan III was a convicted sex offender with a long criminal history. He was apprehended and faced multiple charges, including murder and kidnapping. Duncan was sentenced to multiple life sentences and additional death sentences for his crimes, both at the state and federal levels, but he died of brain cancer in 2021 before his death sentence could be carried out.

The case received widespread media attention due to its horrific nature and the fact that Shasta was found and rescued. Her survival and the subsequent legal proceedings have been subjects of interest to many. Over the years, Shasta Groene has sought to rebuild her life and has periodically spoken about her experiences in various interviews.
